Bedroom Feng Shui: 10 Simple Changes for Better Sleep, Health and Relationships

Did you know that your bedroom is one of the most important rooms in your home when it comes to Feng Shui?

In traditional Feng Shui, your bedroom represents your relationships, your inner world and your deepest desires. It's the place where your body and mind should be able to completely relax and recharge. If the energy in your bedroom is out of balance, you may experience restless sleep, low energy, increased stress or even tension in your relationships.

The good news is that you don't need to redesign your entire room. A few simple changes can make a significant difference.

1. Choose the Right Bedroom Shape

The ideal bedroom is square or rectangular, allowing chi (energy) to circulate evenly throughout the room. Irregular-shaped bedrooms, such as L-shaped rooms, can create imbalanced energy and make the space feel unsettled.

If your bedroom has an awkward layout, use furniture such as wardrobes, screens or shelving to create a more regular shape and encourage a smoother flow of energy.

2. Position Your Bed Against a Solid Wall

Your bed should always be placed against a solid wall whenever possible. This symbolises support and stability in life.

Avoid placing your bed:

  • Against a window

  • Floating in the middle of the room

  • Without support behind your head

A solid wall creates a sense of security, allowing you to sleep more deeply and wake feeling refreshed.

3. Avoid the "Death Position"

One of the most well-known Feng Shui principles is to avoid placing your bed directly in line with the bedroom door, where your feet point straight towards it.

This is traditionally known as the "death position" because energy rushes directly towards the bed instead of gently circulating around the room.

Whenever possible, position your bed so you can see the door without being directly in line with it.

4. Sleep in One of Your Best Life Gua Directions

Traditional Feng Shui is personal.

Your Life Gua gives you favourable compass directions that can support different aspects of your life. For your bedroom, choose a direction associated with:

  • Wellness & Recovery

  • Love & Relationships

  • Growth & Alignment

Your bedroom should encourage relaxation rather than ambition, so avoid using your Wealth & Success direction for sleeping.

5. Be Mindful of What's Behind and Above Your Bed

The wall behind your bed matters just as much as the bed itself.

Avoid placing your bed against a wall containing:

  • A toilet

  • Waste pipes

  • A wash basin

Also avoid heavy items directly above your bed, including:

  • Shelves

  • Cupboards

  • Ceiling beams

  • Ceiling fans

  • Heavy light fittings

These features can create pressure and disturb the quality of your sleep.

6. Create Harmony for Relationships

If you share your bed with a partner, avoid using two single mattresses on one bed base.

In Feng Shui, this creates an invisible energetic divide between the couple. One single mattress for you and your partner symbolises unity and togetherness.

7. Remove Poison Arrows

Sharp corners pointing directly towards your bed are known as "poison arrows".

Look around your bedroom for:

  • Wardrobe corners

  • Chest of drawers

  • Shelving units

  • Sharp furniture edges

If they point directly at your bed, soften the effect by repositioning furniture or introducing a screen to hide the harsh lines.

8. Keep the Bedroom Calm and Yin

Your bedroom should feel peaceful, warm and relaxing.

Avoid:

  • Bright reds and oranges

  • Mirrors reflecting the bed

  • Excessive clutter

  • Overly stimulating décor

At the same time, don't make the room too dark or cold. A balanced bedroom should receive natural light during the day while remaining calm and restful at night.

9. Keep Bathroom Doors Closed

If your bedroom has an ensuite or bathroom opposite the bed, keep the bathroom door closed whenever possible.

Bathrooms create a different type of energy from bedrooms, and closing the door helps maintain a calm, supportive sleeping environment.

10. Look Beyond the Bedroom Walls

Traditional Feng Shui doesn't stop inside your home.

The environment surrounding your property plays an equally important role.

Ideally, your bedroom benefits from higher ground or a mountain behind it, providing support, protection and stability. Inside the home, avoid placing your bedroom directly above a kitchen stove or beside strong water features, as these can create overly active energy in a room designed for rest.

A Quick Bedroom Feng Shui Checklist

When you look around your bedroom today, ask yourself:

✔ Is my bed against a solid wall?

✔ Can I see the door without being directly in line with it?

✔ Is there anything heavy above my bed?

✔ Are there sharp corners pointing towards me?

✔ Is my bedroom peaceful, calm and uncluttered?

✔ Am I sleeping in one of my favourable Life Gua directions?

Finally, ask yourself one simple question:

How do I feel when I walk into this room?

Your body is often the best guide. If your bedroom feels calm, supportive and restful, the energy is likely working with you rather than against you.
