Kitchen Feng Shui: Create a Healthier, Wealthier Home
The kitchen is often called the heart of the home—and for good reason.
In traditional Feng Shui, the kitchen represents your family's health, nourishment and prosperity. It's where food is prepared, conversations are shared and energy is created every single day.
But here's something many people don't realise...
A beautiful kitchen doesn't automatically have good Feng Shui.
The position of your stove, the relationship between fire and water, and even sharp corners can all influence the quality of energy in this important space.
Let's look at some of the most important Feng Shui principles you can apply.
1. Your Kitchen Only Works If You Use It
One of the biggest myths in Feng Shui is that every room affects everyone equally.
In reality, the kitchen has the greatest influence when it's used regularly.
If you cook most days, your kitchen becomes a powerful source of health and abundance.
If you rarely step inside because you rely on takeaways or eating out, the kitchen naturally has less influence on your life, and you can prioritise improving other areas of your home first.
2. Your Stove Shouldn't Be the First Thing You See
Imagine opening your front door and immediately looking straight at the cooker.
In Feng Shui, this isn't ideal.
The stove symbolises your wealth and resources, so having it on immediate display can represent money flowing straight back out of the house.
If your stove is visible from the entrance, don't panic.
Simple solutions include:
-
Installing a decorative screen
-
Using a cabinet or partition
-
Hanging a curtain if appropriate
These soften the visual impact while helping contain the energy.
3. Never Place a Stove Under a Beam
Large overhead beams create what Feng Shui calls oppressive energy.
When that pressure sits directly above the stove, it symbolically presses down on the nourishment being prepared for the family.
If possible:
-
Move the stove to another location.
-
If relocation isn't practical, try to minimise its use where possible.
4. Fire and Water Shouldn't Be Fighting
Your stove represents the Fire element.
Your sink represents the Water element.
When they're directly opposite each other—or immediately side by side—they constantly clash.
This imbalance can create tension within the home and weaken the kitchen's supportive energy.
Ideally, leave around 2–3 feet between them.
Adding a healthy living plant between the two also helps soften the conflict by introducing the Wood element, creating a more harmonious balance.
5. Watch Out for Poison Arrows
One of the most overlooked Feng Shui problems in modern kitchens is something called a poison arrow.
These are sharp edges or pointed corners directing energy towards where you cook the food.
Examples include:
-
Oven
-
Hobs
-
Air Fryers
-
Rice Cookers
Instead of allowing this harsh energy to dominate the room, soften it by:
-
Adding plants
-
Repositioning where possible
-
Covering particularly sharp edges
Small adjustments can make a surprising difference.
6. Your Stove Needs Support
In Feng Shui, support equals stability.
Your stove should ideally sit against a solid wall.
Avoid placing it on a kitchen island where it has no backing behind it.
If moving the stove isn't possible, an extractor hood or another substantial backing feature can symbolically create the support that's missing.
7. Is Your Kitchen in the Centre of the Home?
The centre of a property represents overall health.
Because kitchens contain strong Fire energy, having one in the exact centre of the home isn't considered ideal.
If that's how your home is designed, don't worry.
Simply avoid excessive heavy cooking where practical and focus on keeping the kitchen clean, balanced and well maintained.
Remember—good Feng Shui is about improving what you have, not chasing perfection.
8. Keep the Kitchen Fresh and Clutter-Free
Positive energy loves clean, organised spaces.
A cluttered kitchen can make the room feel heavy and stagnant.
A few simple habits can make a big difference:
-
Keep worktops clear.
-
Remove unnecessary clutter.
-
Repair or replace broken items.
-
Throw away chipped plates, cracked mugs and damaged glassware.
These small actions encourage smoother energy and create a space that's far more enjoyable to spend time in.
A Quick Kitchen Feng Shui Check
Take a look around your kitchen and ask yourself:
✔ Does it feel bright, clean and welcoming?
✔ Is your stove supported by a solid wall?
✔ Are the sink and stove separated?
✔ Are any sharp corners pointing towards your cooking appliances?
✔ Is clutter blocking the flow of energy?
Feng Shui isn't about achieving perfection overnight. It's about making thoughtful improvements that support your health, your family and your wellbeing over time.
Sometimes the smallest changes create the biggest transformation.
