Period 9: What You Need to Know About the New Feng Shui Era
We are living in a new Feng Shui era — Period 9. But what does that actually mean for you, your home and the way you work with Feng Shui?
If you’ve started hearing more about Feng Shui Period 9, you may be wondering what it is, why it matters and whether you need to make changes to your home.
The simple answer is: Period 9 is important to understand if you want to work with traditional Feng Shui today.
We are now in a new 20-year cycle, which runs from 2024 until 2043, and it brings a different energetic emphasis to our homes and environments.
So let’s look at what Period 9 actually means — and, importantly, what you can do with this information.
What is Feng Shui Period 9?
Traditional Feng Shui works with cycles of time as well as the environment around us.
There are nine periods, each lasting 20 years, within a larger 180-year cycle.
We are now in Period 9, which began in 2024 and continues until 2043.
Period 9 is associated with Star 9, which is traditionally connected with Fire energy.
This makes Fire one of the key themes of this current period.
But Period 9 isn't simply about adding more Fire elements to your home.
It is about understanding the qualities associated with this energy and how they relate to the changing environment around us.
What does Period 9 represent?
Star 9 and Fire energy are traditionally associated with themes such as:
-
Visibility
-
Recognition
-
Passion
-
Creativity
-
Transformation
-
Technology
-
Communication
-
Media
-
Entertainment
-
Innovation
-
Rapid change
This makes Period 9 a particularly interesting time for areas such as technology, social media, online businesses, creativity and personal visibility.
It is also a period associated with change and transformation.
Rather than thinking about Feng Shui as simply moving furniture around, Period 9 encourages us to consider how our homes and environments support the direction our lives are moving in.
Why is the South so important in Period 9?
One of the most important things to understand about Period 9 is the significance of the South.
The South is the home of Star 9, which is the ruling star associated with this 20-year period.
That means the South becomes an especially interesting area to look at when assessing your home.
Take a moment to think about your own home.
Where is the South?
You can find it using a reliable compass and then look at what is happening in that part of your property.
Is the South sector complete?
Is it bright and active?
What is happening outside your home?
And what can you see beyond your own garden or property boundary?
These are all useful questions to ask.
Look beyond the walls of your home
One of the things I love about traditional Feng Shui is that it doesn't just look at what's happening inside your house.
Your home is part of a much bigger environment.
The land, roads, neighbouring buildings, surrounding structures and natural landscape can all form part of the assessment.
So when you're looking at the South during Period 9, don't just look at the room that happens to be there.
Look outside too.
For example:
-
Is there a hill or higher ground providing support?
-
Is the area open and exposed?
-
Is there construction nearby?
-
Are there large structures dominating the landscape?
-
Are there sharp or threatening forms pointing towards the property?
-
Is there a road or traffic flow affecting the area?
Traditional Feng Shui considers these external forms when assessing the quality and movement of Chi.
The importance of support
The South is traditionally considered a Direct Spirit location.
Direct Spirit areas are associated with the support of mountains, hills or higher ground.
Think about the feeling you get when you sit with something solid behind you.
You feel supported.
Traditional Feng Shui uses this same principle when looking at the environment around a property.
Ideally, the landscape provides some form of substantial backing rather than leaving the property completely exposed.
If the natural landscape doesn't provide this, traditional Feng Shui can sometimes use substantial physical features such as rocks, boulders or stone to create a stronger sense of support.
What if your South sector is missing?
This is something worth checking if you're choosing a new home.
Take your floor plan and identify the centre of the property.
From there, divide the property into its directional sectors and identify the South.
Is it actually there?
Some homes have unusual shapes, extensions or missing corners, meaning one of the directional sectors may be significantly reduced or completely absent.
A missing South sector is something I would pay particular attention to when assessing a property during Period 9.
If you're considering extending a property, however, there may be ways of incorporating the missing area into the overall footprint.
This is why the shape of a property matters when you're choosing a home.
Period 9 and choosing a new home
If you're buying a property during Period 9, don't just fall in love with the kitchen.
Look at the whole property.
Traditional Feng Shui considers:
-
The shape of the building
-
The surrounding land
-
The entrance
-
The roads around the property
-
The position of neighbouring buildings
-
The landscape
-
The directional sectors
-
The Direct and Indirect Spirit
-
The condition of the surrounding environment
And now that we're in Period 9, the South is an area worth adding to your checklist.
You may find two properties that look very similar from the inside but have completely different external environments.
This is why Feng Shui begins with the environment, rather than simply the décor.
What about the annual Flying Stars?
There's another important point to understand.
Period 9 is not the only layer of Feng Shui.
The annual Flying Stars change every year, meaning the energy within individual sectors of your home also changes over time.
So although the South is particularly significant during Period 9, we also need to consider which annual star is visiting that sector.
For example, in 2026, Star 5 is in the South.
In Flying Star Feng Shui, Star 5 is considered an unfavourable Earth star, particularly when disturbed.
This is why you shouldn't simply hear:
“It's Period 9 — activate the South!”
and immediately start drilling holes, renovating or making major changes.
You need to consider the different layers of Feng Shui together.
This is one of the reasons Feng Shui is much more than simply following a list of cures or adding particular colours to a room.
Period 9 isn't about filling your home with red
One of the biggest misunderstandings about Period 9 is that you need to suddenly fill your home with Fire colours and Fire objects.
You don't.
Understanding Period 9 is much more useful than simply buying Feng Shui products.
Instead, start by understanding:
Where is the South?
What is happening there?
What is happening outside your home?
Is the sector complete?
What does the surrounding landscape look like?
And then consider the other layers of Feng Shui before deciding whether any changes are appropriate.
How can you work with Period 9?
You don't need to completely redesign your home.
Start by becoming more aware of your environment.
1. Find the South of your home
Use a reliable compass to establish the direction from the centre of your property.
2. Look at the South sector
Is it complete?
What room is there?
Is it bright, dark, cluttered or neglected?
3. Look outside
Pay attention to the landscape and surrounding structures.
What can you see from the South?
4. Consider the wider environment
Look beyond your boundary.
Roads, neighbouring buildings, construction and other external forms can all be relevant.
5. Consider the annual Flying Stars
Remember that the annual stars change every year.
Don't assess Period 9 in isolation.
6. Think about your own goals
Your home should support the life you're trying to create.
If you're looking for greater visibility, building a business, studying, creating, recovering or simply creating a calmer environment, think about how the spaces you use every day support those activities.
Period 9: the bigger picture
Period 9 gives us a fascinating opportunity to think about Feng Shui in a slightly different way.
It isn't about decorating your home according to a trend.
It isn't about buying lots of Feng Shui objects.
And it certainly isn't about becoming obsessed with getting everything perfect.
It's about understanding time, environment and how the two interact.
We are now living in a new 20-year cycle, and understanding that cycle gives us another layer of information when we look at our homes.
So, if you haven't already done it, grab a compass and start with one simple question:
Where is South in my home?
You might be surprised by what you discover.
